Wreck This Journal A Hole Lot of Messes

Wreck This Journal A Hole Lot of Messes I aired out Wreck This Journal on Saturday evening, leafing through the pages realizing I expected to begin some place. Each page held another decision, and I realized I could pick whichever one I needed. All in all, where was the ideal spot to start? I previously cleaned up, so showering with the book was out. I didnt have a bit of string convenient and I was on a tight timetable so I couldnt take the book out for a walk. I didnt feel certain with beginning with something creative, such as following my hand (dont I need to make it something a while later?), so I was cheerful when one of the pages called to me, Pour, Spill, Drip, Spit, Fling Your Coffee Here. I was drinking espresso! I despite everything had some at the base of my cup, and left in the carafe! I could paint this page with espresso! I didnt have a paint brush, however that didnt stop me. I had what all devoted Jewish young ladies from Long Island have: make-up brushes! I got one, split the spine of the book, dunked the brush in the espresso, and began painting. Hm. Excessively light. I couldnt do anything, make anything, see anything! Perhaps in the event that I took the brush and splattered the page like each one of those turn workmanship sweatshirts I made in 1988eh. Nothing excessively energizing. Possibly on the off chance that I take the carafe and pour the espresso onto the page, and afterward paint from that point? Better believe it, thatll work! Indeed, it didnt truly workit made a wreck! It spilled through 6 pages of the book AND onto the spine! What's more, ya know what? That wasnt enough for me! I snickered as I shut the book on The Giant Coffee Mess of 2009 watched the remaining parts spill onto the kitchen counter. I at that point opened the book back up attempted to cosmetics brush the espresso into something workmanship like, however understood the wreckage was similarly as it should be. A wreck. A terrible chaos at that! Furthermore, I adored it! I was having a fabulous time, and taking a stab at something new, and appreciating the excursion with my diary. So that is the thing that Im going into this insane, fun, alarming task with: Allowing myself to make a goliath, monstrous wreckage. For a recouping fussbudget like me, its the most ideal approach to begin. It eases the heat off that anything should be beautiful, or pleasant. On the off chance that I center around mess, I can concentrate on the craftsman in me that needs to get out, have some good times, discover her voice, and appreciate the procedure en route. Take a gander at all the wrecks I made for this present week ( you can see the remaining parts of the espresso on each every one)!:

We Should Be HERE - Workology

We Should Be HERE We Should Be HERE I just got back from the largest interactive media and technology conference, South by Southwest or SXSW for short.  It was amazing.  The conference was more than nerd heaven.   It was full of cutting edge technology and start ups and entrepreneurs who are blazing the trails and setting the bar. We Should Be HERE I met some wonderful people and didnt feel obligated  justifying to those around me about checking in with geolocation tools like Four Square and Gowalla.  My fellow conference attendees felt the same.  We talked technology, chatted about twitter apps, and discussed advanced new media strategies for business.  I was in heaven. What did bother me was the lack of HR presence at this conference.  Aside from about a dozen recruiters who specialize or work only in the recruiting and staffing industry, I was one of two Human Resource professionals there.  I spent a lot of time defending our profession, the industry, and the fact that there are successful HR bloggers and new media addicts who work in the human resource industry doing great things. They didnt believe me. We, the HR and recruitment social media community are strong.  I have made life long friendships with people like Trish McFarlane, Steve Boese, Jennifer Miller, Geoff Webb, Bryan Wempen and so many others over the last year.  We are thought leaders in the industry who are bringing the HR profession and professional organizations like SHRM often times kicking and screaming into the new media and digital age.  Thats the exact reason why events like HR Evolution, TRU Conferences, and RecruitFest were created. A couple things. . . Not only should we be here, but we should be united.  Professional organizations like the Social Media Club and Digital Media Organizations hosted cocktail and breakfast events during the conference.  SHRM should be doing this especially if we are serious about being business partners vs. purely operational. Professional organizations like ASTD, SHRM, and Recruiting Blogs should have booths at the interactive trade show.  Its about building partnerships and relationships with our digital business leaders. We should be attending events like theses outside of our own industry or specialty.  In 2010, I have said that I will not be attending HR specific events unless I am asked to be a speaker.  I will, however be attending events outside of my industry like SXSW and Alternative Energy conferences where Human Resources typically do not have a presence.  This is part of my differentiation and education strategy as a HR person and consultant.  I go where the decision makers go. Tell me your thoughts, suggestions, and opinions.  What should we do to push the HR industry forward?  Are attending events like SXSW the answer? Read more about HR and Recruitings role at conferences like SXSW.

Learn About Being a Manufacturers Sales Rep

Find out About Being a Manufacturers Sales Rep Find out About Being a Manufacturers Sales Rep Deals positions spread for all intents and purposes all that you can consider. Generally, at whatever point an organization or individual makes an item or administration, nothing happens except if somebody is there to sell it. For makers, making the items that they mean to bring to showcase is the initial phase all the while. When an item is made, its opportunity to surrender it to their business power. A makers deals power can be a progression of vendors, an immediate deals arm or a group of producers reps. Free Sales Professionals While not generally the situation, numerous makers reps are free deals experts who sign agreements with makers to sell their items. These reps as a rule work under a 1099 understanding, implying that they are not seen as representatives yet as temporary workers. They are answerable for their own duties, medical advantages and some other representative sort understandings. A large portion of these positions are 100% commission based and incorporate no pay by any means. There is no uncertainty that producers rep positions are not for weak willed. Those business experts who are awkward working with no base pay, only from time to time pick a producer rep position. Be that as it may, for those OK with their business capacities and believe in the attractiveness of the item, these positions can be exceptionally fulfilling. Adaptability and Freedom When filling in as a worker, you will be relied upon to work a set calendar, to go to gatherings and training and satisfying numerous other representative prerequisites. However, producer reps really have yet one obligation: Sell! These salespeople set their own calendars, handle their own business preparing and are (generally) allowed to work when they need to work. For whatever length of time that they create and agree to any moral desires for the producer, reps are more similar to business visionaries than workers. This opportunity is normally what pulls in deals experts to these sorts of positions. Many are more than ready to exchange the security of getting a pay and advantages for self-rule. Not For the Unmotivated Fruitful producer reps make them thing in like manner: They persuade themselves and dont need anybody instructing them to get out and sell. The individuals who are either new to deals or arent sure that they have the inside drive that compels them up toward the beginning of the day and out onto the boulevards should reconsider before looking for a situation as a producers rep. In all actuality while reps can and frequently procure a considerable salary, by far most don't. The essential motivation behind why some succeed where many fall flat is close to home want. Without it, the impulse to abuse the opportunity is excessively incredible. Different Streams of Income One way that makers reps give themselves monetary security is by selling for more than one producer. At the same time isn't generally conceivable or may even be not permitted by specific producers, speaking to beyond what one organization can be a powerful methodology. The most astute approach to speak to more than one producer is to discover complimentary items to sell. For instance, on the off chance that you have a free deals position selling PC parts, finding another position selling organizing administrations may build your viability and permit you to bring a more noteworthy incentive to your clients. While speaking to beyond what one maker can be a smart thought, it is only occasionally a smart thought to speak to contending items. As such, in the event that you speak to a transmission producer, selling for another transmission maker will either cost you the two positions or make some uncertainty in your clients minds. Vocation Summary Producer rep positions are an incredible method to assemble strong deals understanding, gain a generous pay and can manage the cost of restrained salespeople with self-rule and adaptability. Chipping away at a straight commission may not be for everybody, except these positions are frequently the most generously compensated situations for capable and committed deals experts. Maker reps should be savvy specialists with strong a comprehension of duties, reasonings and individual contributing. On the off chance that you have the order and want that these occupations request, finding a situation as a producers reps is regularly simpler than finding a worker type position. The producer has less hazard while recruiting an autonomous rep than while recruiting a worker and is additionally ready to give a less-tenured deals proficient a shot.

Speaking After Nancy Pelosi Transformed How I See Myself on Stage Heres How

Speaking After Nancy Pelosi Transformed How I See Myself in front of an audience â€" Here's How I don't know whats more awful: to talk previously or after Speaker Nancy Pelosi. On the off chance that you talk before her, nobody is truly tuning in to you; everybody is envisioning, standing by to hear what Speaker Pelosi will say and see what shell do. In any case, in the event that you talk after her, nobody is truly tuning in to you. Everybody is too occupied with talking about how astonishing Speaker Pelosi was and likely making a beeline for the bar to get a top off or visit the bathrooms. Previously or after, doesnt matter. Basically in any case, its not great not great by any means. This is the thing that I envisioned when I ended up in precisely this circumstance. In April, I was approached to speak to my organization at an occasion we were supporting for the National Archives Museum in Washington D.C. It was a memorable second, praising the 100th year commemoration of the nineteenth amendment womens option to cast a ballot. In the corporate hierarchy, my bosss supervisor couldnt go. At that point my supervisor couldnt go. Along these lines, I was up following up. Also, in the wake of being ceaselessly for a work excursion to London and arranging a birthday celebration for my 4-year-old, going to D.C. wasnt precisely what I had arranged. Gracious and we heard Speaker Nancy Pelosi is joining in, my partner on our corporate interchanges group said. Be that as it may, you know how these things go, not certain about the likelihood of her really attending.I went to the occasion persuaded the speaker would not appear; There was no compelling reason to get myself worked up. I was visiting with companions and partners, getting a charge out of a glass of bubbly when I heard: Shes here. She has arrived. And there she was: Speaker Pelosi. What's more, after presentations and a hurricane voyage through the show, I was scheduled to talk directly after her. I was guided through the group, and afterward remaining behind the platform to one side. Indeed, I needed to talk after the speaker.Nancy is wearing a wonderful white pantsuit. Nancy isnt utilizing any notes. Nancy simply made a clever joke. The group just giggled and Nancy chuckled back. Nancy simply shared an anecdote about her first time in the White House. What's more, everybody is entranced, everybody is listening. And as I watched Speaker Pelosi so easy talk and interface with the group, I envisioned myself stumbling before the platform in my white dress, shaking and incapable to talk with a dry mouth. I frantically required water, and I additionally expected to pee. Neither of which was going to occur, in light of the fact that I was up close to talk, you know, directly after Speaker Nancy Pelosi.Should I poke a fun at how I am talking after Nancy Pelosi? About how cool her white pantsuit is? Would it be a good idea for me to apologize for how they need to hear me out at this point? As I hung tight for my turn, I was helped around one to remember the best suggestions I have ever gott en guidance one of my vocation supports, Jonathan Atwood, gave me a couple of years prior. At that point, I was getting ready for a discussion to give on our companys incorporation excursion to our main 170 pioneers in North America. I asked: what might I be able to state that could be of an incentive to this senior crowd?Tell a story, recount to your story, Jonathan trained me. He instructed me to imagine myself being a group of people part and consider how I could catch their consideration. Nobody needs to hear corporate talk or corporate details. Nobody needs to hear addresses. Be provocative, state something sudden. Be personal. Most significantly, simply be you.Applause. What's more, the ball was in my court. My hands somewhat shaking, in my long white dress, I oversaw not to trip and made it to the platform. I put my notes down and balanced the mic. Then, I followed Jonathans exhortation. I didnt start off with any disclaimer language. I didnt make any jokes or utilize self-beli ttling language. I just recounted to my story. I concentrated on why my organization was supporting this display, the companys association with the testimonial development and my own motivation and association with the work. What's more, I utilized my notes to direct me. I made a couple of jokes and extemporized en route. What's more, it was alright. I was okay. That was a magnificent discourse, Speaker Pelosi said to me after I ventured away from the platform. I snatched her and embraced her and shouted and hopped up and down.I mean, I did in my head.I stayed ready, grinned and expressed gratitude toward her for her caring words. What's more, I got an image with her.So, whenever you need to talk after Speaker Nancy Pelosi or any individual who is a legend, an individual of impact, somebody you appreciate profoundly recount to a story. Offer something individual. Make a joke. What's more, whatever you state, own your words. There may just be one Nancy Pelosi. What's more, theres just a single you. Your voice your story matters. And since you cannot be Speaker Pelosi, simply act naturally. All things considered, not we all can pull off a white pantsuit.

10 Survival Tips for New Recruiters

10 Survival Tips for New Recruiters I remember  my  first day on the job clearly, like it was yesterday. I also recall how at the time everything  seemed as clear as mud. In the beginning I had no idea what to really expect from a career in agency recruitment. Id heard all the  great things about the industry, from the great  people to the perks of being out and about;    the pints-a-plenty; the thrill of a new deal; the satisfaction of fulfilling an important client brief; the happiness  in helping someone  bag their dream role. Oh, and Id also heard a thing or two about  the  generous financial incentives (and company trips). It sounded incredible, but  Id also heard about the bad stuff too, from the long hours to the endless amounts of time spent on the phone; the knock backs and industry competitiveness. The first few months really were a baptism of fire. It didnt take long before my eager and open mind was completely  jam-packed  with  new terminology, processes, a hundred-odd colleague names, lists of current and prospective clients, candidate databases and portals full of jobs  I didnt really understand (yet). I felt positively overwhelmed to say the least. Luckily I had a really supportive and inspirational team around me to tell me everything was going to be okay, but still, until that day came when Id found my feet and made my first placement, I couldnt help but fear failing! If I was that new starter again,  here are the 10  things  I would whisper into my own ear to make my life easier: 1. Take your time A new job is always stressful and youre not  expected to pick things up in an instant. Learning takes time and mastering something takes even longer. Dont worry about whether youre getting it quickly enough, or churning out quality results from the get-go. If you dont allow yourself time to let things sink in and learn  the ins and outs of the role  properly, youll end up cutting corners, making mistakes and working yourself up into a stressful lather. Let yourself learn good habits from the beginning and let your speed increase with time; you dont need to be a bull at a gate. 2. Make the call If you put it off, itll only get more daunting. Whether its the first candidate call or the first client call, it doesnt matter. If your manager has entrusted you with giving it a go, take it as a stamp of approval to give it your best shot. The worst thing that can happen, is that you lose your words or feel flustered and stuck if youre put on the spot. Alas! You can keep on using the excuse, Im sorry, Im new please forgive me, let me check with one of my colleagues, for as long as you need. Calls get easier  the more you make, and talking to people in your industry is the best way to  learn first-hand about the industry youre recruiting in. Straight from the horses mouth. 3. Ask the question If you dont ask the question, you wont get the answer you want. Im a big believer in trying to work things out for yourself first, but if you find yourself at a stumbling block, dont waste time by fretting or making matters worse by making the wrong decision. If you have a great manager, theyll tell you that no question is a stupid question, so take their word for it! Even if it is, who cares?  Youre just a newbie, so milk it if  you need to. 4. Dont slack on admin Having  good administrative processes will prove to hugely underpin your success as a 360-degree consultant. When you first start out, its hard to appreciate the importance of recording your calls (in great detail) and creating follow ups and reminders for yourself. CRM systems are designed to make your life easier in the long run, so getting to know the one youll be using will prove absolutely vital to your success. Sure you might remember your first 5 calls pretty well, but 2 weeks down the track you would have made hundreds of calls and sent bucket loads of emails, and it will be one big blur. Its also important to keep on top of admin  even when youre busy and have a million and one deliverables; scrounging for contact details you knew you had once and scratching your head to remember information is a huge waste of time, and means things will probably slip through the cracks, like a deal!! 5. Take people up on their offer to help If youre  working for a profitable agency, you are without doubt surrounded by recruitment legends and experts whove talked the talk and  walked the walk. Grab five minutes with your colleagues to ask advice. Each person will have their own way of doing things, and at such an early stage of your career, the best thing you can do is learn as many tips as possible, and decide for yourself (through trial and error) what works best for you. If your management team offers lunch time training sessions, or one on one excellence coaching, dont view it like extra work, but a way to learn from the best and improve on your own skills. 6. Go to the work drinks, but dont be that person Feeling part of the group and having friends in the office helps to make the office a friendly, comfortable place to be. Socialising with colleagues will give you a better understand of the business, will strengthen your internal network and will allow you to debrief stresses with likeminded people who are in the same boat as you. Its just really important not to drink too much, and be the one who gets super messy and embarrassing. Throwing yourself at a colleague, being sick in the gutter outside the office or revealing too much information about yourself this is what you want to avoid, so you dont have to do a walk of shame into the office the next day wearing your new loose-unit reputation. 7. Take your lunch break When you work long days, its important to make your hours as productive as possible. I used to get fuzzy brain late in the afternoon something chronic, before I started taking my lunch break. When youve got a lot to do, taking time to get some fresh air or go for a walk can seem like a huge waste of half an hour, but it will actually revive you and make you way more alert for the rest of the day. Without a doubt you will come back to the office with a fresh perspective. 8.  You dont have to be an industry expert Your strengths lie in your people  and sales skills; you do not have to be an expert in everything related to your industry straight away. Sure, the more  subject matter knowledge and understanding of the roles you have, the better, but dont  worry about mastering the industry lingo, worry about matching people to your clients brief, and the rest will come with time. 9. Get used to BD all day, every day Always ask questions, dig for new information and  chase leads to bring your business forward. Setting aside specific time for business development is a great idea, but only if you remember to practice it throughout  everything else you do. I was often guilty of focussing  too much on giving  my current clients a great service, and delivering well to live roles, at the expense of all business development. Spreading your eggs across a number of baskets means that if youre left high and dry by a client or candidate, youre never completely out of work. 10. Start early or leave late, never both Whether or not you work overtime is completely up to you. In recruitment, you only get out what you put in, so sometimes youre tempted to work longer hours to maximise your chances at making a fee. My best advice is to pick one; either start early or leave late, but never both. Its important to give yourself time to recover and relax each day, enjoying life outside of work. Stretching your day out at both ends might make you feel like youre the most dedicated consultant in the world, but really, youre probably setting yourself up to burn out! Dont let yourself run out of steam  in the overwhelming early days. Youve got  your whole career ahead of you. Image: Shutterstock

Top Five Tips For Creating A New You

Top Five Tips For Creating A New You In such a distorted and hectic world, more and more people are suffering from depression and other issues that they just can’t seem to shake. In a world where everything is going at 100 miles per hour it’s important to take time just for you and to make sure you are happy and content. Below we’ve put together 5 top tips on how to start healing and solving depression and bringing the focus back to you and your happiness. Health and Fitness You’ll find this in any top tips you read, because it is vitally important. Being healthy and fit will improve you as a person and your moods. You don’t have to go to the gym four times a week to be healthy, but just taking short walks regularly, stretching or attending a yoga class. These small steps will help you become healthier and much happier. Diet also plays a big part.  The mantra is “You are what you eat” and it is true. If you are not eating a healthy balanced diet, you aren’t going to feel healthy and balanced in your self. New Clothes Treat yourself! A new wardrobe now and then can give you feeling that you are worth it. Looking good in a brand-new dress can make a world of difference compared to going out in the same outfit you’ve had for months! Make sure when you leave the house you aren’t just throwing any old clothes on but you are presenting yourself properly. Looking good will instill that confidence in you and might get you turning some heads as a bonus! Write about your past One of the best ways to get over and come to terms with issues in your past that have led to your issues is to write about them. This isn’t a tip on how to write a novel (you can do that if you want!) but more just putting your thoughts down and into something tangible. It makes things seem much more clear and more powerful when they are written down and this can help you on your road to coming to terms with previous issues you’ve had. Focus on friends and family The people around you are the best support network. More often than not, when you are depressed or feeling helpless, the last thing you want to do is socialise. However, your friends and family can be the best support network and one that won’t judge you. Make sure you are keeping in touch with them and not letting things slip away to the point where you feel you can’t talk to anyone. Do what makes you happy Obviously, this comes with several caveats, including whether what currently makes you happy is bad for you (eating chocolate and watching movies!) But make sure you are putting time into you. See it as an investment.  You are putting the time into you and your hobbies and likes. The return on that investment will be you becoming happier and it touching other areas in your life for the better.

Top 5 Dos and Donts for that Office Holiday Party

Top 5 Do’s and Dont’s for that Office Holiday Party We’ve all been there, the office holiday partyâ€"boring, long, awkward, and attendance is usually required. Research backs up this sentiment, only 36 percent of employees describe their work holiday parties as fun, according to a recent survey from OfficeTeam. Which means two-thirds of us dread the end-of-year get together. However, all office functions are a chance to interact with peers and management, as well as put your best foot forward. Keep these five dos and dont’s in mind when you attend your annual office holiday party this year. Don’t Forget to Read the Invitation Some people breeze past the e-vite, but the devil’s in the details. Make sure to know all the party info. You don’t want to show up late, or mix-up the location. Most importantly, you should know what to bring, for example; a dish for a potluck, a wrapped gift for a white elephant exchange, or a plus one/guest. A few days before the party, re-read the info, so you’re ready and prepared. Do Embrace the Ugly Christmas Sweater The ugly Christmas sweater trend is not going anywhere, anytime soon. Most of us have one, 92 percent of holidays shoppers have reported spending anywhere from $20-50 on an ugly Christmas sweater. If your office has an ugly sweater-themed party, don’t be a grinch and make sure to participate! There are so many options available these days; you’re sure to find something to fit your style. Silly sweaters can also be a way to show that you have a sense of humor, but a word to the wiseâ€"keep it PC, nothing too inappropriate. Don’t Drink Too Much Yes, the drinks might be complimentary, but there are plenty of other opportunities to cut loose and have festive cocktails during the holiday season. Even if you work for a laid-back company or are friendly with your co-workers, getting drunk in front of your boss is never a good look. Companies have even stopped including alcohol to curve potential inappropriate behavior. Less than half of companies, 48.7 percent, served alcohol at their parties this past year, down from the 61.9 percent that did in 2016, according to a recent survey.   Play it safe, stick to one or two drinks to be social, but don’t go beyond that. Do Get Involved While games or forced networking can be awkward at first, don’t act too cool for school. Exemplify the team player that you are, and take part in the fun. If there are activities planned, make sure to participate. Even if it’s just a mingling event, try to chat with co-workers you do not regularly interact with, get to know them. If you’re the first person to break the ice, you might even make another co-worker feel more comfortable. A gracious and friendly guest also proves that you take the initiative socially, a born leadership quality. Not too mention, it’s better than sitting alone or looking at your phone. Don’t Forget People (and Their Phones) are Watching Even though it’s a party, still remember to act generally professionally. Office gatherings aren’t a time to blow off steam about work, gossip, or flirt. You don’t want to be seen in an unflattering situation by peers or superiors. Especially in the age of social media, HR or party coordinators are often taking pictures for company updates or newsletters. You do not want to be memorialized in an unflattering situation. Be Grateful and Enjoy Your Office Holiday   Party Even if only one and three employees enjoy work holiday parties, put on a happy face and try to be one of them. No matter how boring, lame or silly the celebration might be, remember that someone put time and effort into planning the party. So thank the host, party coordinator, boss, or HR team for their efforts. Remember that your attitude and actions at company events reflect on you as an employee and individual.

Writing a Directing Resume For Your Film Career

Writing a Directing Resume For Your Film CareerIf you are one of the millions of people who are searching for a job in the entertainment industry, then you may be interested in writing a directing resume. This is an important step in getting a job and also a vital part of securing that job.As you can imagine, a director is the person who oversees the production of a film or TV show. While the head writer and producer might have direct reports or assistant directors, a director is ultimately responsible for the entire production. Some directors are called 'show runners' because they own their own shows, while others are called 'creators.' There are many types of directing jobs and it is important to understand the different types and each of them might be worth hiring someone with your particular experience. In the movie business, the most common type of directing job is that of a technical director. Technical directors must be skilled in creating new projects as well as directing old ones, since the ideas often originate with the director of photography. Technical directors typically also run sets for the movie.A director of photography usually works closely with the cinematographer (or director of editing), and he or she works closely with the producer, the director and the actors. The director of photography's primary focus is the creation of films and the understanding of how to tell a story, so that the viewer feels like he or she is there. The director of photography also directs many of the actors and plays key roles in the visual effects of the film. The first thing that a director is responsible for is finding locations for his or her film, which usually requires multiple trips to the location before the first day of shooting and one trip after that. The director might also help find costume pieces, handle lighting and set design and even set the tone of the film by doing a walk-through for the actors and crew. The director must know when to introduce the characters and when to tell the story is usually brought to life by a camera that has an operator or sound on the side. During filming, the director is able to see all of the action that is taking place on the set, and he or she must know when the actors are moving and when the camera is panning so that he or she can capture every moment of the story. Each scene and different scenes will need to be filmed with different cameras, which might mean different setups for each scene. Cameras on the set that are not used in one scene may be used in another scene so that the director does not miss any scenes. This is why it is very important to create a writing a directing resume for all of the directors and producers in the film, so that he or she can search through each and every resume and tell which one is right for the job.It is important to have a working memory, which means that the director of photography must have a good memory for what was shot and what worked for the original visi on. The director is very involved in the directing process and therefore he or she must be able to explain the whole process of making the film and explaining the reason behind everything that is being shot. A creative director might work with directors of photography and other creative producers in order to help them achieve their vision.

7 Myths about Multitasking and Its Effectiveness CareerMetis.com

7 Myths about Multitasking and Its Effectiveness Source -huffingtonpost.comMultitasking â€" some people think of it as being a strength. Essentially, it means that you can direct your attention to numerous purposes and get positive results every single time. And, to some extent, this might be true: multitasking could bring beneficial results, especially if you want to combat procrastination.Still, you should note that the results will be temporary, in the sense that you’re going to taste the bitterness of multitasking in the future. At first, glance, concentrating on a single task at a given time could seem like an indulgence, a luxury you cannot afford. Still, this is far from the truth.1) Multitasking Maximizes Your ProductivityevalThis is, perhaps, the biggest myth about multitasking.Truth be told, when you multitask, you choose to sacrifice your full presence for the concept of enhanced productivity, which doesn’t even exist. There is compelling research outlining that multitasking is less efficient than concentrating on a s ingular task.Oddly enough, this creates the illusion of productivity, leading to a feeling of self-satisfaction and gratification. Concurrently, research points out that being actively focused on two things at the same time aren’t possible â€" that’s simply because the human mind works differently. What is more, trying to combine a cognitive activity with an automatic activity, such as texting while driving, is widely contraindicated. In fact, the National Transportation Safety Board points that texting while driving is as serious as driving after drinking alcohol. When you multitask, you shift your concentration from an action to another at an astonishing speed. And while you may think that you’re actually paying attention, you’re not. You are simply forcing the brain to switch among various tasks â€" since each task utilizes a specific part of the brain. That is to say, it will take you more time to complete the tasks you’re switching between. That is not all: you’re more likely to make errors during the process. 2) Multitasking Helps You to Save TimeevalThe second myth about multitasking is that it helps you to save time. And we all know how important this can be, considering the fast-paced lifestyles we lead.Nevertheless, the reality differs: it might take you twice longer to finish two projects simultaneously than it would take if you would focus on each separately. This principle also applies to automatic behaviors, such as driving. In fact, experts indicate that it will take much longer for drivers to reach their destinations if they text or chat on their cellphones.evalOn the other hand, you might save time with things you can do in batches, such as sending your e-mails at once or paying all your bills at once. So, you must understand that each task requires a specific mindset and degree of concentration. 3) Multitasking Reduces StressThe main reason why most people multi-task is that it gives them the impression that they get things done, which diminishes the stress associated with completing the tasks.Nevertheless, the thing is that multitasking actually increases the production of cortisol, which is the stress hormone. That’s because multitasking means that your brain is continually switching its attention, which causes stress and makes you feel mentally exhausted. This source indicates that multi-tasking damages your brain, in the sense that people that regularly multi-tasked had diminished brain density in the anterior cingulate cortex. This is the region that is responsible for emotional control, empathy, and cognitive control.Even though more research should be made in this respect, the existing evidence is still compelling.4) Multitasking Allows You to Prioritize MoreMany people assume that everything on their to-do lists is a priority. Hence, it is evident that it requires one’s immediate attention and concentration. Nevertheless, when you aim at prioritizing almost everything on your to-do list, in fact, you ar e not prioritizing anything. That’s because multitasking makes you feel more stressed, which will instantly reduce your rate of success. On the other side, you should comprise the traditional to-do list and categorize your tasks by the degree of urgency. Also, try to assign your undivided attention to every specific task, and you’ll soon realize that this approach is much more efficient. An Amazon short-read bestseller by D.Crenshaw on multitasking.5) Multitasking Allows You to Concentrate on More Things at a TimeWhen you attempt to do two or multiple things at once, you might be tempted to believe that this enhances your concentration.evalHowever, this is just an illusion. This study actually suggests that the simple action of interrupting a task and suddenly concentrating on another one can be enough to disrupt short-term memory.Within this study, the researchers asked the participants to analyze one scene, and afterward, the image was unexpectedly changed with a different one. An d the people aged between 60 and 80 found it really difficult to remember the details and information regarding the first one.According to experts, as the brain ages, it becomes much more challenging to get back on track, even after a short detour.Still, this doesn’t mean that young people won’t experience the detrimental effects of multitasking. It simply means that it might be less apparent.eval6) Multitasking Challenges Your CreativityCreativity is a valuable skill, which is of great importance in most working fields. And while you may believe that being focused on numerous tasks might make you more creative, this is far from the truth. That’s primarily because multitasking requires your working memory, also referred to as temporary brain storage. The thing is that, when you utilize all your working memory, this will impair your capability of being creative.According to a 2010 study, focusing too much could actually jeopardize one’s performance, especially when it comes to creative problem-solving tasks. As multitaskers have a lot of things going on in their heads, it is much more challenging, if not impossible, to have spontaneous, creative solutions to problems.7) Multitasking Enhances Your FocusIt is a well-known fact that being focused is the key to solving a task and do that successfully. To that end, one of the most worrisome downsides of multitasking is the fact that it makes the brain more vulnerable and exposed to internal distractions.Let’s take an example: social media notifications. If you were 100 percent honest, you would admit that ignoring them is really difficult. Also, even if you don’t want to, somehow they manage to detract your focus from your tasks. As your engagement increases, your brain wants to anticipate more interaction. Due to this anticipation, there is the urge to constantly check your social media account, even if you’re doing something else. And these small brakes are the ones that make your mind lose its preciou s focus.Final ThoughtsTo conclude, multitasking isn’t going to maximize your productivity and efficiency when it comes to solving tasks. In fact, it is quite the opposite â€" it will make you less productive, it could damage your memory and concentration while making you feel stressed.Hence, even if multitasking has become second nature to you, this doesn’t mean you cannot do something about it. By committing to each individual task and directing your full concentration towards solving it, you’ll accomplish better results.Remember that your mind is a powerful resource â€" as long as you use it correctly.

3 ways to prepare for your interview

3 ways to prepare for your interview We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. When I started to job search in college I knew I needed to have my resume and portfolio in perfect condition. What I didnt realize is that its not uncommon for an employer to do a Google search of a candidate before they even look at the applicants resume. And its frowned upon now, but many employers asked candidates to log in to their Facebook accounts during an interview to check for any unsavory content. You can always find ways to clean up your resume and sharpen your cover letter, but it can be difficult to edit your online persona. Thankfully I did some social media profile clean up before I started applying to jobs, but sometimes the line between showing your personality and turning off employers can be fuzzy. If youre questioning what sort of grooming you need to do to your online presence, here are three simple steps to prepare your social profiles for a job interview. Understand the Company Culture The best way to gauge how your social profiles will be perceived by a potential employer is to determine how the company portrays itself, and how employees use social media. Is the company only tweeting about its business trends, or are they making YouTube videos? Monitoring a business social media is a good indicator of what the company expects from its employees. If the only profile you can find for anyone you know at the company is LinkedIn, theres probably a reason for that While you can get an indication of a company culture from the web, its not always straightforward. If youre not sure what kind of company would be a good fit for you, a staffing agency may be able to match your personality and skills with the right company, since they work directly with companies to fill positions. Once youve determined what the company culture is like, you should figure out what personal information is available online. Search for Your Name Simply searching for your name is a great way to determine what others can see when they search for you online. When youre searching and viewing your online profiles, log out of your account so you can view your account as a potential employer would. Once youve finished searching for yourself in one search engine, switch to a different one and dont forget to check the images. Depending on what you find, it may be time for some damage control. If not, its still a good idea to double check all of your social media profile settings. Set Your Privacy Luckily, social media networks allow users to manage their privacy account settings your first step is just remembering which profiles you have and how private you want them to be. Facebook is notorious for making less than agreeable updates to privacy settings, but theyve recently made it a little easier to manage your settings. This tutorial can show some of Facebooks recent updates to privacy settings. Though each profile is important, Facebook is the social network that any potential employer is most likely to try to access during the interview process. Social networks like Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn have more of an all-or-nothing privacy setting. When choosing your privacy level, its important to pay attention to your account settings and linked accounts. Its easy to have Instagram photos you think are private be automatically pushed to Facebook or Twitter for example. A public profile may seem risky, but giving employers a glimpse of your personality before they meet you can help you stand out from a stack of resumes. Regardless of the social media privacy approach you take the most important thing to remember is to make smart decisions when it comes to posting content online. Social media profiles may be only a small piece of our online presence, but theyre becoming increasingly important to potential employers. If you keep these tips in mind and think before you post, your social media profiles can help you get the job youre looking for. Cover Letter and Resume Template

Cover Letter and Resume TemplateIt is the work of a layman to write a simple cover letter and resume. For someone who knows their way around, they can write a resume as well. Even though you are just a part-time writer, it does not mean that you cannot create a convincing cover letter and resume template. To start with, if you have not done so, go ahead and read a few self-study course. Some people may find these courses helpful but it would not help you in terms of being able to craft an effective cover letter and resume template. A lot of what you learn would be irrelevant to the job you are applying for. Once you start to practice what you are learning, you will realize that a lot of what you learned is irrelevant. What you should not do is to copy what you read in those courses. You should do it on your own and apply what you have learned. If you are already doing this, then you are good to go.You are no doubt aware that there are some differences between writing a resume and a cov er letter. The resume tends to tell about your educational background, the experience and the skills you have. Since there are several jobs available, it is not a bad idea to list down your strengths so you can land a position that needs you.Writing a resume focuses more on your personal qualities and experience. You can come up with different things to include in your resume like where you have worked and where you did your academic training. A cover letter usually gives a one liner introduction of you and the position you are applying for. For most of the jobs you apply for, it is the resume that will be used for contacting you for further details. When you are preparing your cover letter, be sure to use your creativity. You can include the details about what you will give the company that you are applying for. You should also include the reason why you are applying for that job. Your resume will come after all of that. Now that you have written the resume, it is now time to write y our cover letter. The cover letter should not be too lengthy, since it will only serve to remind the reader that you are still looking for jobs. In addition, it should highlight the strengths and weaknesses of you and the position you are applying for.

Gender Pay Gap Women Go to College, Outearn Puerto Rico Men

Gender Pay Gap Women Go to College, Outearn Puerto Rico Men Men outearn women in every U.S. state, at every education level, and in nearly every occupation. Yet there’s one place where women, overall, have caught up: Puerto Rico. Puerto Rican women who worked full-time in 2016 earned a median salary of $24,486, compared to $23,711 for men. That means women earned $1.03 for every dollar earned by men. By contrast, in the U.S. at large, women earned only $0.80 on the dollar earned by men. One factor at play is that women are much more likely to earn a college degree than men in Puerto Rico. About 20% of Puerto Rican men 25 and older hold at least a bachelor’s degree, compared to 29% of women, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. (By comparison, while women earn more degrees than men in the rest of the U.S., most states have a smaller college degree gap with an average of less than 2 percentage points.) What’s driving more women in Puerto Rico to pursue postsecondary education? Eileen Segarra Alméstica, an economics professor at the University of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras, thinks it may be that there’s more opportunity in the labor market for men to succeed in physical jobs that don’t require a college degree but still pay well. Women, on the other hand, don’t see those same opportunities, and so they take advantage of Puerto Rico’s comparatively cheap higher education system to open up more labor market options. But before you rejoice about the island solving a persistent economic and social problem, economists have some bad news: There are still equity gaps. When you compare men and women with the same level of education, that familiar gap reappears, says Segarra Alméstica, who has been studying gender disparities in Puerto Rico’s workforce and published a working paper with her co-author Jose Caraballo-Cueto. For workers with just a high school diploma, men earn 13% more than women on average, based on five years of earnings data collected by the Puerto Rican Community Survey, a branch of the Census Bureau. Segarra Alméstica says the gap rises with each step of education: Male bachelor’s degree holders earn 22% more than their female counterparts. Advanced degree holders earn 30% more. Segarra Alméstica and Caraballo-Cueto also found women were still less likely to make it to high-ranking managerial positions, and like in other countries, having children increases the gap between what women and men earn. They also found that when men pursue jobs in fields where they’re underrepresented, they’re more likely to earn higher pay and promotions. Puerto Rican women face a glass ceiling, while men ride a glass escalator, they write. And whatever small gains in moving toward pay equality that women in Puerto Rico have made, the future doesn’t look promising. Puerto Rico filed to restructure more than $70 billion in public debt last year just months before Hurricane Maria slammed into the island and further exacerbated its economic problems. The government’s most recent fiscal plan doesn’t include layoffs, but Segarra Alméstica expects they’ll happen. That will disproportionately affect women, who make up 44% of the labor force overall but 51% of government jobs, she says. Puerto Rico’s financial crisis is also bound to mean higher education cuts and tuition increases in the coming years, which may cause women to rethink the value of a college degree, Segarra Alméstica says. And Puerto Rico’s public schools are equally in crisis: Between 2010 and last year, the territory closed more than 300 schools as thousands of families fled the island, according to PBS. The Department of Education announced last week it planned to close an additional 283 schools after the hurricane. The government has promised that teachers will be relocated to the remaining open schools. But many educators are worried about their jobs or have chosen to pursue more stable teaching jobs in Florida, New York, or Texas. More than 80% of public school teachers in Puerto Rico are women.
